Tirol & Italy

To continue our R&R vacation........while we were in Garmisch we decided to drive into Italy for a day.  I really, really want to see Venice before we leave Europe, but we didn't do that this time around.  We drove through the beautiful Brenner Pass through the Alps, which is the main north-south roadway from Germany to Italy, and went through Austria and then into Italy. We went into the region of Tirol which is in both Austria and Italy.

The Europabrucke (Europe Bridge) carries the six-lane autobahn over the valley of the Sill River.  It was celebrated as a masterpiece of engineering upon its completion in 1963.  There was a rest stop right after crossing the bridge so we stopped to get a better view of it.  There is a walkway on the bridge so we actually walked on it.  Boy, did is shake when those semis rolled past!

We drove into northern Italy which is still very much German looking since it was at one time a part of Germany.  We are still in the region of Tirol.  The toll roads are horrible in Italy!!  I can't believe how much you have to pay.  You take a ticket when you get on the autobahn and then pay at the exit you get off of.  So you are just constantly paying tolls as you get on and off to go to various places.  Anyway, like in Germany, castles dotted the hills as we drove through.  Here is one of them.

In Italy we stopped at two cities.  The first was Bolzano.  It was a pretty place, but German/Austrian looking. Bolzano is the biggest city in South Tyrol, which is an autonomous province in Northern Italy with a special statute. This statute preserves the rights of the German-speaking minority in Italy.   In the market square is the Bolzano Cathedral.

Views of the city streets.   There was a market going on.

Our next stop was in the small town of Sterzing (Vipiteno in Italian).   It was a pretty city and fun to poke around in.

After this we drove back to our cabin in Garmisch.  It was fun that we were in three countries this day!   Germany, Austria and Italy!   Hopefully we can get back to Italy before we have to move next summer.
